The First School Trike Rally is an annual celebration of bikes, trikes, and imagination, coinciding originally with Fayetteville’s Bikes, Blues, and Barbecue.

The benefits of bikes

We all know that bike riding can benefit physical fitness, including cardiovascular health, muscle development, balance and coordination and bone health.

It might be surprising that bike riding is also good for the brain. It enhances kids’ proprioception (awareness of body position) and coordination. The two-sided nature of biking helps to develop the corpus callosum, the part of the brain that communicates between the right and left hemispheres.

Riding a bike provides a sense of independence for children. It allows them to explore their surroundings and gain confidence in their abilities. Riding a bike also involves navigating spaces, which helps children develop spatial awareness, understand distance, and make decisions about speed and direction.

As they grow, children learn to assess situations and make decisions on the road, such as stopping at intersections, avoiding obstacles, and following traffic rules. At Trike Rally, we help the little ones understand the idea of following rules by giving them arrows on the ground to show the direction of movement. They learn about road safety, the importance of wearing helmets, and how to be cautious and aware of their surroundings.

More than growth

Biking can be a social activity when children ride with their friends. It fosters social skills like communication, cooperation, and turn-taking.

Being outdoors and connecting with nature can have a calming and therapeutic effect, even at young ages. Encouraging bike riding at a young age promotes a lifelong habit of physical activity and a love for outdoor recreation. Over time, you can introduce to environmental concepts, such as reducing pollution and conserving energy by using an eco-friendly mode of transportation.

All together now!

In addition to bike riding, Trike Rally is a community event that brings First School families together. It introduces children to other members of the community and other traditions, and builds rich memories.
